Portugal, from the Algarve's sun to the Atlantic wind of the north
A long, narrow country with one ocean and many climates. The Algarve is hot and dry, the Lisbon coast is cooled by a summer wind, the north is green and wet, and Madeira is a mild island of steep basalt. Alojamento local, heritage zones and municipal rules shape every project, so we begin with the questions.

A map in words, from south to north
- The Algarve: hot dry summers, sandstone cliffs and golf belts, a thick layer of rental villas and boutique hotels. The cold pool is the product and the shade is the design. See the Algarve.
- Comporta and the Alentejo: sandy ground, reed fences and pines on the coast, very hot cork-oak country inland, and strict protections. See Comporta and the Alentejo.
- Lisbon and Cascais: a cooler summer, a strong north wind and hills of tile and stone. Roofs, patios and seaside villas. See Lisbon and Cascais.
- Porto and the north: granite, tile and rain, with hot valleys inland. Walled gardens and wine-country hotels. See Porto.
- Madeira: a basalt island with a mild year and steep sites. See Madeira.
Who we draw for in Portugal
Owners of alojamento local (AL) properties come first: villas in the Algarve and houses around Lisbon that let to guests for part of the year. Next are boutique hotels and quintas, surf and wellness retreats along the coast, gyms and padel clubs in the cities, and private owners, many of them foreign. See holiday lets, boutique hotels and private homes and fincas.
Six words for the first call with a Portuguese council
Portugal's building regime treats small installations in a garden by size and by what each council adds. The national text exempts annexes of up to 10 m² and 2.2 m that do not face the public road, garden greenhouses and light leisure installations smaller than the house, and puts a pool built beside a house under prior communication, so a cabin and a pool can follow different routes in the same garden. The câmara municipal may add to the list. Ask it, in writing (RJUE, Articles 4, 6 and 6-A, as consolidated on the Diário da República, October 2026).
Mains, boards and a chiller that wants 16 amps
Low-voltage supply in Portugal is 400 V between phases and 230 V phase to neutral (ERSE commercial-relations regulation, Article 22). The household tariff ladder runs from 1.15 to 41.4 kVA in thirteen steps: 1.15, 2.3, 3.45, 4.6, 5.75, 6.9, 10.35, 13.8, 17.25, 20.7, 27.6, 34.5 and 41.4 kVA (ERSE tariff structure for 2026). The installation rules (RTIEBT, Portaria 949-A/2006) say installations up to 10.35 kVA without three-phase loads are single-phase, and above 10.35 kVA they are fed three-phase unless the distributor agrees otherwise.
A 6 kW heater and a 4 HP chiller together are about 9.6 kVA when both run, which only fits a 10.35 kVA single-phase supply if little else is on, and a 6.9 kVA contract will trip. Ask your electrician and your supplier before the order.
Ports, roads and the last stretch
Crates arrive by sea at Lisbon, Sines or Leixões and travel by road. The last stretch is where Portugal is demanding: tiled hillside streets in Lisbon, narrow lanes in Algarve villages, stone gateposts and ramps in the north, steep roads on Madeira. We ask for the width of the lane and the door in the first message and plan a crane or a carry where the van cannot go.
Two sample briefs
A year on a Portuguese terrace
| Algarve and the south | Lisbon and the west coast | Porto and the north | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter | mild, a warm pool and a cabin are the draw | cool and wet, the cabin is the star | wet and grey, the cabin is the point |
| Spring | perfect for a first plunge | windy but kind | unsettled, with long bright spells |
| Summer | hot and dry: chiller shade, cold pool | cooled by the north wind: balanced | mild by the sea, hot in the valleys |
| Autumn | the second season of guests | mild, the warm side returns | rain returns; the cabin again |
Three climates mean three seasonal routines on the card we write for the owner. A holiday let in the Algarve needs both pools covered and a timer on the heater; a house in Porto needs a roof that sheds water and a base that drains; a flat in Lisbon needs a crane day and a calm neighbour.
Portugal in published numbers
Eurostat counts 49.5 million nights booked in Portugal through Airbnb, Booking and Expedia in 2025, 10.3% more than in 2024. The Global Wellness Institute's country release puts the Portuguese wellness economy at $21.0 billion in 2024, of which wellness tourism is $5.1 billion, with 2.49 million inbound wellness trips. Those are the publishers' definitions and their numbers; we use them only to show the size of the audience. Nothing here is a forecast of what a pool or a sauna would earn.
The two sample briefs come from the price list, and the kit builder lets you try your own combination.
Do you speak Portuguese?
The site is available in European Portuguese, and you can write in English or Portuguese. Say which you prefer.
Do you have an office in Portugal?
No. The design is done in 3D and the work is made in our own workshop, then shipped to Portugal. Installation on site belongs to every quote, and before any deposit we tell you in writing who does it at your address.
What is an ice bath called here?
Banho de gelo, in European Portuguese. A cold plunge pool is a piscina de água fria, or a cold plunge.
Do you work in the Azores?
On request. Send the island and the plot, and we price the freight and plan the delivery.
