A sauna and cold plunge pool in Marbella and the coast around it
Villas on the hillside above Nueva Andalucía, penthouses at Puerto Banús, golf estates around Guadalmina, padel clubs between the golf courses. The Costa del Sol asks three things of a plunge pool: stay cold when the terral blows, fit inside an estate's rules and still be useful in February.

When the terral blows
The Costa del Sol is mild by Spanish standards until the terral arrives: a hot, dry wind from the north-west that can push the air above 40 °C in a few hours and keep it there overnight. That is the day a plunge pool is tested. A chiller designed for a 38–40 °C ambient with a proper air path holds the water through it; one tucked in a closed cupboard does not. At the record of 44.2 °C even a well-placed machine runs flat out, and the cover and the shade carry the pool. We design for the bad day, and the machine is placed in shade with a louvred door facing away from the sun.
What the record shows: AEMET's series for Málaga airport, which starts in 1942, gives a maximum of 44.2 °C on 19 July 2023, and a July 2023 mean of daily maxima of 34.3 °C. A pool and a chiller designed for 38–40 °C are designed for a normal bad day, and that record is the reason to keep margin above it.
Hillside terraces, estates and the rules inside the gate
Much of the coast sits on a slope. The terrace is small and sloped towards the sea, the neighbours are close and the community has statutes. We draw cold below and heat above, with a few steps between, put the plant under the upper terrace and ask the community what it requires. Gated estates often set works hours, crane days and finishes; send the statutes and we plan around them. See private homes and fincas.
Holiday lets: two seasons in one terrace
A villa let year-round has to serve July, when cold water is the point, and February, when a warm pool and a sauna are. The hot-and-cold pair is the format that serves both, and the holiday-let page lists what the cleaner does on changeover day. The project profile shows a composite of this scheme.
For a villa that lets, two rules sit above the town hall. The EU's short-term rental regulation, applying from 20 May 2026, makes a listing show its registration number wherever a register exists (Regulation (EU) 2024/1028, EUR-Lex). And in Spain the national registry created by Royal Decree 1312/2024 no longer stands: the Supreme Court annulled its registry procedure on 19 May 2026 (BOE, 8 June 2026), which leaves the regional tourist register, in Andalucía or wherever the villa is, as the practical gate.
Padel clubs and hotels
The coast is full of padel clubs, and the ones with the best terraces are the natural homes for a recovery room. A glass sauna for eight, two plunge pools and a small plant room sit between the courts and the bar: see padel and racquet clubs. Hotels use courtyards and roofs; see boutique hotels.
Marbella through the seasons
January to March, the warm pool and the sauna carry the terrace: the light is the reason to be outside, not the heat, and a 38 °C soak at nine in the evening suits the season. April and May are the best weeks for a plunge pool, when the water is cold and the air is kind. From June to September the cold pool is the centre and the sauna moves to late evening, when the terrace has cooled to something a person can stand. October is the second spring. A pair of pools with covers, and a timer on the heater, handle all of it.
Slopes, drains and the rains
The Sierra Blanca and the hills behind the coast shed water fast when autumn storms arrive. A terrace that is dry for eight months can carry a stream in ten minutes. We put every plant chamber above the level of the lane drain, give each pool an overflow route, and ask where the water goes when it rains hard. The same question matters for an installation week: we plan around forecasts, not around the calendar.
Beach clubs, hotels and the evening ritual
Hotels and clubs on the coast can use the same module: one or two glass cabins, a cold pool and a sunken seat, and a rota that ends when the bar opens. Our boutique hotel page describes the courtyard layout; the hygiene and noise notes matter most when the corner sits beside bedrooms. Ask for the plant schedule before the order.
What to ask, and of whom
- Your community or estate: works hours, crane days, noise limits, finishes.
- The ayuntamiento: whether a free-standing cabin or a new pool is minor works, needs a licence or a declaration, and what documents it wants.
- Your electrician: the contracted power, the phases and the room left on the board.
- Your insurer: what a plunge pool and a heated cabin require.
A four-bedroom villa, priced
Four ways a Costa del Sol project loses a month
- The estate's rules found after the order. Crane days, works hours and finishes are set by the community. Ask first, order second.
- A plant chamber below the lane. When the autumn storm comes, water finds the lowest room on the hill. Put the plant above the drain.
- The chiller in a cupboard. On a terral afternoon a closed cabinet is an oven. The machine needs air in and air out.
- Glass facing the afternoon. A cabin whose glass takes the full west sun heats itself and the guests. Turn it or shade it.
The villa sample above is built from lines of the price list; change the sauna or the pools in the kit builder and the range follows.
Will a plunge pool stay cold in a terral?
Yes, on a normal bad day, if the chiller is sized for a 38–40 °C ambient and the machine has air; at the record of 44.2 °C expect it to run flat out. We say so in the quote and put the air path on the drawing.
Can a villa in an urbanización add a sauna?
Usually, but the statutes and the town hall both have a say. Ask for the statutes and the works rules before the layout, and we draw to them.
How do the crates reach a hillside villa?
By road to the gate, then by hand or by crane, depending on the lane. Send the access width and we plan the day.
Do you build for hotels in Marbella?
Yes: courtyard saunas, roof pools and plant rooms. See boutique hotels.
