A sauna and cold plunge pool in Barcelona, three kinds of roof at a time
The Eixample's flat roofs, the terraces of Gràcia and Sarrià, villas in Sant Cugat and along the Maresme, and a good many gyms and clinics in between. Barcelona's version of a plunge pool is an engineering problem with a view: weight, consent, noise and a crane in a narrow street.

Three roofs, three briefs
- The Eixample flat roof. Large, usually communal, and often shared with a water tank and a lift motor room. A cabin here needs the community's consent, an engineer's note on the slab and a crane day. The reward is a view over the rooftops to the hill and, in a good year, the sea.
- The terrace in Gràcia or Sarrià. Smaller and private: a two-seat cabin with a glass front and a free-standing ice bath on slate. Weight and noise decide the layout, and the neighbours are on three sides.
- The penthouse. Space for a plunge pool, a cabin and a deck, and a structural question every time. We draw the circuit onto your architect's sections and mark the point loads.
See made-to-measure saunas for the small cabins, and free-standing ice baths for the one that does not need a pool.
Weight, in tonnes
A 1,100-litre plunge pool is 1.1 tonnes of water plus its structure; a 420-litre tub is just over half a tonne full. Old Barcelona buildings have vaulted slabs, timber floors and roof terraces never designed for this, and an engineer should sign off before an order is placed. We provide a one-page data sheet with the weights, footprints and loads for that conversation.
Consent, noise and the street
Three permissions are usually in play: the community of owners (comunitat de propietaris), the town hall for any works and for any crane or hoist that occupies the public street, and, for protected buildings, the heritage authority. A chiller is audible in a quiet light well, so we place it away from windows and on anti-vibration feet. Ask early about the hours the street may be closed for a crane.
Barcelona airport (WMO normals 1991–2020, Spain's national submission): mean daily maxima of 29.0 °C in July and 29.7 °C in August, a January mean minimum of 6.2 °C and 567 mm of rain a year. The figures look mild beside Madrid's or Málaga's; it is the damp that shows up as condensation on cold pipes and coping.
Villas, Sant Cugat and the Maresme
Houses on the hills behind the city and along the coast have gardens, and gardens take a garden sauna and a plunge pool with few of the city's constraints. Heat and humidity in summer are the design concern: a cold pool in muggy air condenses on the coping and the pipes, so we insulate and draw a drain for the condensate. See garden saunas.
Gyms, studios and clinics
Poblenou, Sant Martí and the Eixample are full of boutique gyms in ground-floor units, and Pedralbes and Sarrià are full of clinics. A recovery room of ten to twenty square metres suits both; see gyms and studios and clinics and longevity.
Water in a dry year
Drought has made water a live question in Catalonia. A plunge pool is a small closed circuit of about 1,100 litres, filled once, filtered and topped up. Ask the town hall what applies to a first fill in your district, and we list the litres in the layout.
What a Gràcia terrace comes to
Four ways a Barcelona roof project goes sideways
- The roof nobody checked. A slab designed for a water tank, not a tonne of pool. An engineer's note belongs at the start of the project, not at the crane.
- The community learns at the crane. Neighbours who were not asked before the order will be asked at the crane, and not kindly.
- A chiller on a light well. Sound bounces. The machine goes away from bedroom windows and onto anti-vibration feet.
- Condensation nobody drew. In humid summer air a cold coping and its pipes sweat. Insulate and drain them.
Four seasons on a Barcelona terrace
Winter evenings are mild enough for a glass cabin and a warm soak under a clear sky. Spring and autumn are the best months for a cold plunge. Summer is warm and humid, nights barely cool, and the cold pool is the draw. The same terrace works in all four seasons if the plant and the covers do.
The terrace sample combines a two-seat cabin with an ice bath: both are in the price list, and the kit builder shows the sum with the chiller.
Can a flat in the Eixample have a sauna on the roof?
Sometimes. The community of owners must agree, and an engineer must confirm the slab and the access. We draw the layout and the weights for both conversations.
Is a free-standing ice bath simpler than a pool?
Yes: no building work and it moves with you. It still needs a floor that can take over half a tonne and a power point on a protected circuit.
Do you work in Girona and the Costa Brava?
Yes, as an extension of the Barcelona area: hotels, villas and clubs. Send the plot.
